The Tool Benches
I wanted a set of tool benches that were both portable and stable, portable enough that I could easily move and rearrange them singlehandedly myself, stable enough that there would be minimal vibration with a power tool mounted on top. These seemingly contradictory goals are accomplished by having each pair of legs be bistable. In the “up” position, the casters are able to roll around freely, while in the “down” position, the casters are stored away, and the legs rest directly on the floor.
To put the casters on the right side in the “up” position, stand on the right side of the bench, and lift the right side up a couple of inches. The 2×4 counterweight will swing down and extend the right side casters to the right of the legs. Finallly, gently lower the right side so that the bench weight is carried on the casters. Repeat on the left side. The bench should now be able to roll around freely.
To put the casters on the right side in the “down” position, stand on the right side of the bench, and lift the right side up a couple of inches. With one foot press on either of the casters until they are underneath the legs. Finallly, gently lower the right side so that the bench weight is carried on the vertical 2×4 legs. Repeat on the left side.
